Create a segment

Build a saved, auto-updating group of customers or leads to target with marketing campaigns.

segments marketing audience customers leads targeting

A segment is a saved group of customers or leads you can target with marketing campaigns. Choose who belongs by setting filters — location, services, spend, lead status, and more — and CleanOps keeps the membership up to date as your data changes.

Before you start: sign in to the CleanOps mobile app with an account that can manage marketing (an operator/employer account).

  1. 1

    Open Segments

From the bottom navigation, open More, then Marketing, then Segments. The list shows each segment as a card with its Audience Type (a Customers or Leads badge), Audience, Location, linked Campaigns, and Create Date. Use the search field, filter icon, or plus icon from this same screen.

  2. 2

    Start a new segment

Tap the + icon. The Add New Segment sheet opens. Under General Info, enter the required Segment Name and, if useful, a Description. Choose Customers or Leads under Audience Type before you set the lower filters.

  3. 3

    Set the location

For a customer segment, use State, City, ZIP, Country, Address contains, and Coverage radius (miles) to narrow the audience by place. Every location field is optional. Leave a field blank when it should not affect membership.

  4. 4

    Add customer service filters

Keep Customers selected to use the customer filter set. Under Service Details, choose Surfaces chips such as SIDING, PATIO, ROOF, CONCRETE, DECK, and DRIVEWAY; set Summary Area ranges; and choose Complexity. Under Finances and Time, narrow by Average Receipt, Average Duration, and Jobs period.

  5. 5

    Save the customer segment

Tap Create Segment. CleanOps computes membership and returns to the Segments list, where the new card appears with its audience type, audience size, location, campaign count, and create date.

    Review Segment Info

Tap the segment card to open its detail screen. The audience type appears as a label at the top, next to the Created date. The Segment Info tab lists the filter values you saved — for a customer segment that’s Description, Surfaces, Total Area, Complexity, Average Receipt, Average Duration, and Jobs Period (filters you left blank show a dash). Location filters aren’t repeated on this tab; they show on the list card and on the Overview map. Use the tabs to switch between Segment Info, Overview, and Related Campaigns.

    Check the Overview

Open Overview to check the computed Audience count and, for customers, Total Revenue. When no matching members have mapped addresses, the map area reads No mapped locations yet.

  8. Manage a segment from the detail menu

Use the pencil icon to edit filters quickly, or open the three-dot menu for Edit, Duplicate, Refresh Membership, Archive, and Delete. Archived segments show Unarchive here instead. Mobile manages these actions from the detail screen; the list cards open the segment rather than showing separate row action icons.

  9. 8

Widen filters when the audience is too small

If Audience is 0 or lower than expected, edit the segment and remove filters that are too narrow. For example, changing the demo customer segment to only State: NY recomputed membership to 11, updated Total Revenue to $2,825, and populated the map.

After widening filters: 11 customer members and a populated map.

  10. 9

    Build a Leads segment

To target leads instead of customers, set Audience Type to Leads. The lower form changes to lead filters: Status (New, Contacted, Scheduled, Qualified, Unqualified, Lost), Source, Next Action (Contact Lead or Schedule Visit), Creation period, and Next step period. Tap Create Segment when the filters are set.

Review lead filters on Segment Info

A Leads segment’s Segment Info tab lists lead-specific filters such as Status, Source, Next Action, Creation period, and Next step period instead of the customer service and finance filters.

  12. What a Leads segment shows on Overview

On Overview, a Leads segment shows Audience and Conversion instead of customer Total Revenue. Leads usually do not have mapped job addresses, so the map area can still read No mapped locations yet even when the segment is useful for campaigns.

  13. Customers vs Leads use different filters

Customers filter by location, surfaces, complexity, area, average receipt, average duration, and jobs period. Leads filter by status, source, next action, creation period, and next step period. Switching Audience Type swaps the filter set, so check this before saving a new segment.

  14. 11

    Find a segment with search

Back on the Segments list, type into Search segments… to filter cards by name as you type. Search works alongside the filter sheet, so you can search within Customers, Leads, archived records, or a location/date subset.

  15. Filter and sort the list

Tap the filter icon to open Filter & Sort. Mobile groups list controls into one sheet: Sort by, Audience, Location, Date, Include archived, and Apply Filters. Use Reset to clear active filters.

  17. Show archived segments

Turn on Include archived in Filter & Sort, then tap Apply Filters. Archived segments are included in the list and can be opened from their card; the detail menu offers Unarchive instead of Archive.

  18. Bulk actions are web-only

The web Segments page has checkbox bulk actions for archive and delete. The mobile app does not expose a bulk-selection bar; archive, unarchive, duplicate, refresh, or delete one segment at a time from the segment detail menu. A segment used by an active campaign should be archived instead of deleted.

  19. Your segment is ready

Your segment is saved, its membership is computed, and CleanOps keeps it current as customers, leads, jobs, and filters change. Use it as the audience for a one-time campaign or an automation campaign, and return to the detail screen whenever you need to check size, map coverage, or filters.

  20. Tips & related

    • Build broad first, check Audience, then tighten the filters.
    • Use Duplicate from the detail menu when you want a variation without rebuilding every filter.
    • Use Refresh Membership if you need to recompute immediately after recent data changes.
    • Archive is reversible; Delete is permanent and may be blocked while a campaign uses the segment.
    • Related: send a one-time campaign and build an automation.
