Add a tip to an invoice

How customers add a gratuity — a suggested percentage, a custom amount, or none — when they pay an invoice.

When tipping is enabled, every customer-facing invoice that can be paid online shows a tip control just above Pay Now. This guide walks through what your customer sees so you can help them — it’s the same control whether they open the invoice from the link you emailed or from their customer portal.

Before you start: make sure tips are turned on (see enable invoice tips) and the invoice has an online payment link (your Stripe account is connected). The tip control only appears on invoices a customer can pay online.

  1. 1

    Open the invoice

The customer opens the invoice from the payment link in their email or text message, or from Invoices in their customer portal. Below the line items they see an Add a tip card — 100% goes to the crew — with one button per suggested percentage plus Custom and No tip, all above Pay Now.

  2. 2

    Pick a suggested tip

The customer selects a percentage — for example 18%. A green Gratuity line appears in the totals (the percentage of the invoice subtotal), the Total updates instantly, and the card notes the amount, e.g. 18% of $200.00 subtotal and Gratuity +$36.00.

  3. 3

    Or enter a custom amount

To tip a specific figure instead, the customer selects Custom and types a dollar amount. The Gratuity line and Total update to match.

  4. 4

    Pay the invoice

The customer selects Pay Now to continue to secure online checkout. The chosen gratuity rides along as a Gratuity line item, so it’s collected together with the invoice in a single payment.

  5. No tip is always an option

Tipping is never required. No tip is selected by default, and the customer can return to it any time before paying — the Gratuity line disappears and the total drops back to the invoice amount.

  6. The same control in the portal

Registered customers see the identical tip control on the invoice in their customer portal, styled to match the portal — so the experience is the same whether they pay from the emailed link or after signing in.

  7. Tips work with promo codes

A tip and a promo code can apply to the same invoice. The promo discount and the Gratuity each appear as their own line above the Total — the suggested-percentage tip is still figured on the invoice subtotal.

  8. When tipping is turned off

If you’ve turned tips off in settings, no tip control appears and the customer goes straight from the invoice to Pay Now. Turn it back on under enable invoice tips.

  9. The tip is collected with the payment

The customer’s gratuity is added as a Gratuity line item and charged together with the invoice through your connected Stripe account. Once the payment succeeds, the tip is saved on the invoice and folded into your revenue totals.

  10. Tips & related

    • Suggested percentages and the on/off switch live in your settings — see enable invoice tips.
    • Tips require an online payment link; if a customer can’t see the option, check that the invoice was sent with the payment link included and that Stripe is connected.
    • Related: enable invoice tips, create and send an invoice.
