Add a tip to an invoice

How customers add a gratuity — a suggested percentage, a custom amount, or none — when they pay an invoice.

When tipping is enabled, a customer who pays an invoice in the CleanOps app is offered a gratuity at the moment they pay. Instead of an inline control, the app shows an Add a tip sheet the instant they tap Pay Now — much like the tip prompt on an in-person card reader. This guide walks through what your customer sees so you can help them.

Before you start: make sure tips are turned on (see enable invoice tips) and the invoice has an online payment link (your Stripe account is connected). The tip prompt only appears on invoices a customer can pay online.

    Open the invoice and tap Pay Now

    The customer opens the invoice — from the link you sent or from Invoices in their account — and taps Pay Now. There’s no separate tip field on the invoice itself; the tip prompt comes next.

    Pick a suggested tip

    The Add a tip sheet slides up — Show appreciation for the crew (optional) — with a button for each suggested percentage and the dollar amount it works out to. The customer taps one, for example 18%. A green line reads Gratuity (18%) added · +$54.00 and the button updates to Continue to Payment · $318.00.

    Or enter a custom amount

    To tip a specific figure instead, the customer taps Custom amount and types a dollar amount. The sheet shows Gratuity added · +$40.00 and the Continue to Payment total updates to match.

    Continue to payment

    The customer taps Continue to Payment · $TOTAL to go to secure online checkout. The chosen gratuity rides along as a Gratuity line item, so it’s collected together with the invoice in a single payment.

  5. No tip is always an option

    Tipping is never required. No tip is selected by default when the sheet opens, and the customer can tap it — or Cancel the sheet — any time before paying. The gratuity clears and the total drops back to the invoice amount.

  6. A pay-time sheet, not an inline field

    On the web invoice the tip control sits inline above Pay Now; in the app it’s this pay-time sheet instead, so the option is unmissable at the moment of payment. The choices — suggested percentages, a custom amount, or no tip — are the same on both.

  7. Tips work with promo codes

    A tip and a promo code can apply to the same invoice. The promo discount is already reflected in the amount due, and the suggested-percentage tip is still figured on the invoice subtotal, then added on top.

  8. When tipping is turned off

    If you’ve turned tips off in settings, no Add a tip sheet appears — tapping Pay Now goes straight to checkout. Turn it back on under enable invoice tips.

  9. The tip is collected with the payment

    The customer’s gratuity is added as a Gratuity line item and charged together with the invoice through your connected Stripe account. Once the payment succeeds, the tip is saved on the invoice and folded into your revenue totals.
